Essential Supplies Checklist: What Every New Dog Owner Needs

Essential Supplies Checklist: What Every New Dog Owner Needs

Just so you know: our blog shares general tips and insights to support dog parents, but it’s not a substitute for professional advice. For medical or behavioural concerns, your vet or a qualified behaviourist is always the best place to start.

Bringing a new dog into your home is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. From toys to grooming tools, it’s easy to wonder, “Do I really need all this stuff? ”

To help you start on the right paw, we’ve put together a complete checklist of essential supplies that every new dog owner should have. These items will make life easier for you, more comfortable for your dog, and set you both up for a happy, smooth transition.

1. Food and Water Essentials

High-quality dog food: Choose a diet appropriate for your dog’s age, size, and breed. Puppies, adults, and senior dogs have different nutritional needs. If you are unsure, call your local vet for their professional advice.

Food and water bowls: Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are best. They’re easy to clean and durable. Consider a non-slip mat to prevent spills.

Treats: Treats are vital for training, bonding, and rewarding good behaviour. Look for healthy, natural ingredients and dog-friendly options.

2. Bedding and Comfort

Dog bed: A comfy bed gives your dog a safe, secure spot to rest. For puppies, consider a bed that’s washable and durable. Or add a bed topper like our Howel Throw Down for an easy-to-clean bed topper that can also be a travel mat for your new pup.

Blankets or towels: Soft blankets or towels are perfect for cuddling, lining crates, or wiping off after walks. Dog-specific towels are even better. They’re extra absorbent and gentle on your pup’s coat. Of course we recommend any of our Howel towels!

3. Collars, Leashes, and ID

Collar or harness: Ensure it fits properly - not too tight, not too loose.

Leash: A standard 1.2–1.8 metre leash is ideal for everyday walks. Consider a slip lead for loose lead training and be sure to use it correctly. If your dog pulls, a harness leash may not be ideal until you put the time in to train them to walk beside you. Remember, you are the pack leader.

ID tag and microchip: Always have an up-to-date ID tag on your dog’s collar and ensure they’re microchipped. It’s the best way to keep them safe.

4. Grooming Essentials

Brush or comb: Regular brushing prevents matting, reduces shedding, and keeps your dog comfortable. The type depends on coat length and texture.

Dog shampoo: Choose a gentle, dog-specific formula. Human shampoos can irritate their skin.

Nail clippers: Keep nails trimmed to prevent discomfort or injury. Daily walks on pavement can help trim nails naturally. Just make sure the pavement isn’t too hot in the summer months; early morning walks are best on warm days.

Dog towels: Quick-dry, absorbent towels make bath time and rainy walks much easier. A beautiful opportunity to bond with your dog, and our Howel towels are not only super soft, but you’ll only need one with their super absorbent power.

5. Training and Enrichment

Crate or playpen: Great for housetraining, creating a safe space, and giving your dog their own area. Our Beach to Boot towel is blanket-sized and a great tool to drape over their crate when they need quiet time training.

Chew toys: Puppies especially need chew toys to soothe teething pain. Durable toys also keep your dog entertained and prevent destructive chewing. Keep in mind the size of your dog vs. the size of your dog to avoid choking risks.

Interactive toys and puzzles: These stimulate your dog’s mind, encourage problem-solving, and reduce boredom. Great to have for rainy days to absorb some of their energy.

6. Health and Safety

Veterinary care: Schedule a check-up and vaccinations, and discuss parasite prevention with your vet.

First aid kit: Include items like bandages, antiseptic sprays or wipes, and tweezers/tick removal tools for minor emergencies.

Poop bags: Always carry compostable bags on walks. A responsible owner is a happy owner! No one wants to be ‘that person.’

7. Travel and Outdoor Gear

Car harness or crate: Keep your dog safe in the car.

Portable water bottle or bowl: Perfect for walks, hikes, or trips to the beach.

Raincoat or jacket: Some dogs appreciate protection from cold or wet weather.

Bonus Tips

Start simple: you don’t need everything at once. Focus on the basics first.

Quality over quantity: Durable, safe items save money and stress in the long run.

Comfort matters: Soft beds and towels, gentle grooming, and a secure crate help your dog feel safe and loved from day one.

Being prepared with the right supplies makes the first days, weeks, and months with your new dog much smoother. These essentials ensure your pup is comfortable, happy, and safe, while giving you the confidence to enjoy your new furry companion to the fullest.

Starting off with the right gear isn’t just practical; it’s the first step in building a lifelong bond with your dog. 🐶💛
